Lodging & Transportation Logistics

Once you have registered for the conference, you need to begin planning your travel to the celebration of Latino children's literature, literacy, and cultures. The information below provides driving directions, lodging suggestions, and parking tips.
Conference Location, Map, & Directions
The Conference will be held in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. On Thursday morning, the conference will begin in Room 205 of Gorgas Library, located at 711 Capstone Drive. Airport & Transportation Information
Tuscaloosa's airport is for private planes only. The Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) will be the airport that attendees will fly into. It is located 62 miles (approximately an hour) from the city of Tuscaloosa; for additional information on the airport, visit: http://www.flybirmingham.com.

Transportation from Birmingham Airport to Tuscaloosa

Conference attendees have various travel options from the Birmingham airport to Tuscaloosa.

                         -Individual - $65
                   -2 people - $45 per person
                   -3 or more - $35 per person

  • Rental Car Companies at Birmingham Airport. For best rates, book online. Prices start around $35/day. If you call or rent upon arrival, prices are at least $10/day more. This is the most economical option for most conference attendees.

Lodging - Conference Hotels 
The Hampton Inn- University  is ideally located approximately 2 miles from the University of Alabama's Gorgas Library which houses the National Latino Children's Literature Confernece.  Amenities include free wireless internet access, free breakfast, and warm cookies in the afternoon. We have negotiated a nightly rate of $99 for Wednesday and Thursday. Rooms are on a first-come, first-served basis. Please make your reservation directly with the hotel by phone (205) 553-9800 or their website www.hamptoninn.com. Remember to mention that you are with the SLIS Latino Children's Literature Conference when you make your reservation in order to receive the preferred rate (available until February 28, 2012). The conference code is "LLC."

Hotel Capstone is locate on the University of Alabama campus and is a short walk to the Gorgas Library. A shuttle to the Gorgas Library is also available from the hotel. Amenities include free wireless internet access. We have negotiated a nightly rate of $115 for Wednesday and Thursday nights. Rooms are on a first-come, first-served basis. Please make your reservation directly with the hotel by phone (800) 477-2262. Please mention that you are with the SLIS Latino Children's Literature Conference when you make your reservation in order to receive the preferred rate (available until February 27, 2012).

Parking Information
Visitor Permits will be issued to anyone registering for the Conference. These visitor parking permits are valid in all legal parking spaces unless otherwise restricted to a designated zone or area (such as handicap parking).  Click here for a parking map. The red parking spaces on the map are Student parking and the green parking spaces are the Faculty/Staff parking. These spots are valid for visitor parking. Permits will be mailed to the attendee's address listed on the registration form. We will not be responsible for lost parking permits.

Transportation to the Thursday Evening Event
The free  El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) family and community event
will be held at the Tuscaloosa Public Library which is located approximately 1.3 miles from the University of Alabama on the corner of Queen City Avenue and Jack Warner Parkway.
